Chrome Shelled Regios Episode 11: Nina, The Failed Caretaker~

Minnie: Regios decides to come out one day earlier than usual! Yay~ But what does that mean? It means that I will not be blogging until Thursday when ToraDora comes out, unless I decide to catch up on both Slayers and Hetalia so I can blog about them. I might do that actually but chances are I will concentrate on my tests and my writing instead. I am thinking of just dropping Hetalia because it’s so hard to find vids. I might download them… maybe. I did so for the first two episodes but we’ll see. I’m becoming busier and busier by the week. Spring break needs to be here already. Haha. Anyways, that’s a pretty long rant up there so I’ll just say that I’ll be done with Regios and then be blog-free for a week! Hurray?

Clannad After Story Episode 22: Deus ex Machina

So it's not exactly obvious in this ambiguous photo, but... the animation in this scene was awesome.

Garrick: Yes. I’m back momentarily. I won’t even bother listing the hundreds of reasons I haven’t been here. But I assure you all, they exist. And, here’s the review of the final episode of Clannad After Story, Episode 22. I had to do it, somehow. After all, it is the season finale. And while I may have left out all the other episodes up until now… I guess I felt… inclined to finish off the season. (More …)

    Animals in Anime! [Winter 2009]

Giving animals some love...whether they want it or not.

Giving animals some love...whether they want it or not.

Katt: The winter season is coming to a close. Looking at it in retrospect, there are quite a few animals present in either new series during this season or series that were continuing through it. Some are invented creatures while others are just regular old pets, and then there are those that fit in-between, being regular and supernatural altogether. As the resident animal lover of Hey, Say, Anime!, I wanted to write up a post that gives tribute to these loveable beasts. With that in mind, I present to you all the first edition of Animals in Anime!

Thanks, Minnie~! I wasn’t sure if the alignment would work when I attempted it, but I am very pleased that it did. XD I will give more lessons on animals in our anime in the future, for sure!

Okay, I don’t know anything about Vietnam (it’s a big world with lots of countries), aside from a few books and movies about the war. However, to the eyes of the American soldiers, the farmers at least seemed to be hard workers, and the Vietcong – Holy crap! Those people made incredible sacrifices, misdirected as many of their actions may have been (as were much of ours). I would guess that any ‘laziness’ among Vietnamese is a more a result of colonialism and/or communism, rather than a cultural trait. But, as I said I really have no idea what I’m talking about.

Okay, back to the subject at hand (I’m a little more comfortable here)! I think most fans who knock Naruto do it not because they don’t see the moral themes in it, but rather because they’ve seen them before, and are tired of the same-old-same-old (not to mention the infamous filler arcs). The shonen genre tends to focus on heroes who gradually get stronger defeating tougher and tougher enemies through hard work and perseverance, and often fails to introduce anything really new. Of course, if Naruto helps you be a better person, more power to it – I read a fair bit of the manga back in the day, although I didn’t keep up with it ’cause it goes on forever. Still, there are I think shows that deal with morality in a much more thought-out fashion, such as Fullmetal Alchemist (the first series) with its focus on Edward’s growth realization that there are things bigger than himself, and Monster (although I’ll admit I haven’t seen all of this, ’cause I’m hoping for a US release).

Anyways, good post, it was an enjoyable read and really got me thinking.

First of all: Love your post about this =]

I have to agree with almost all of what you said there. Japanese people (and animes/manga) made a great impact to us all anime watcher and those who were interested in Japanese culture. The way they keep fighting and do what they can to not wast any precious time they have. That is a great thinking!

“Lots of asians working hard, getting straight A’s, but that isn’t their goal, that’s their parent’s ideological goals implanted in their heads.”

Umm… I think that’s also depend on socialty and where you are. Most of people realize their dream after they have grown up and regret this and that. Though I am not disagree with you about follow your dream, just it was complicated sometimes to just follow your dream. But that doesn’t mean you need to follow your parents advice forever! You need to be yourself too =]

For the anime fans, I don’t see are nerds who is anime fans around o.O! Most of those anime fans are rather socialty and outgoing as I notice! But on the other side, Japanese people view and stated most of the anime fans (aka otaku) that way so ~.~ (and as a huge ouran fan, I got to say I agree we don’t learn much from it, but this anime state as comedy from the very start so don’t expect something out of it. The only thing we learned that Host Club exist XD).

All in all, this was a really great post! From the very start to the end =]
(ps. sorry for so long reply XD!!!)

You know, I believe this is one of the best things I’ve ever read on a blog. Not necessarily because I agree with all of it, but because it’s like an intellectual pondering, not an argument, rant, or whatever. Then again, one of the things I enjoy the most is looking into the minds of others and this definitely fits.

Personally, I’ve learned almost all my philosophy from anime/manga/games. That’s not to say everything I’ve ever watched/read/played has taught me something, but more that they can be (and are usually, at least in my experience) extremely good mediums for examining the nature of the world. Of course, that’s kind of obvious, but it’s still good to see people recognize that and talk about it.

    • foomafoo 4:15 pm on March 13, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Well Naruto is great before it was turn into some fillerish series prior the quarter ending of the series itself.

Also, I think we have kind of similar things involving our country in which I also hope it will change the way naruto does things without giving up– but it is hard for people to base their work on an infamous thing for adults such as anime…

I can also say that anime is a part of my life as a thing for inspirations and such. (e.g. R.O.D taught me to read book, read book and read book since I don’t really read).

I’d like to see more of this kind posts here in HSA :)

      > Currently Japan has the second highest growing economy

Oh come on. Japan has gone through two decades of economic stagnation, with steady asset price slump, 0% inflation and interest rates, and 0-2% nominal GDP growth. And it has been hit very hard by the global crisis, with recession starting from Q4 2009, and a scary quarter-to-quarter plunge in exports (40+% annualized). Future prospects are anything but rosy.

As for Japanese kids being bred in a culture of hard work, excellence and over-achievement–you shouldn’t put too much credence into Japanese national myths. Slacking off is entirely appropriate (and even expected of, say, University freshmen, or a good number of salarymen) as long as you pretend to make efforts and “hang in there”.

I’m not saying you should or shouldn’t be proud of being Vietnamese, you should or shouldn’t look up to the Japanese, you should or shouldn’t use Naruto as a role model or whatever. But with Wikipedia and friends only a click away, you ought to get your facts straight. It can only deepen your analysis of the philosophical opuses published in Shounen Jump and their underlying moral teachings.

        >As for Japanese kids being bred…

Actually, why do you think Japanese high school students have the highest suicide rates? It’s because of the pressure. These might be “national myths” but it’s also the cold hard reality a lot of us dismiss because it doesn’t fit our schema. It’s a shame because by dismissing it, we can’t find ways to lower the suicide rates for Japanese high school students… sigh.

          > why do you think Japanese high school students have the highest suicide rates?

They don’t. Even among OECD countries alone, the top 3 suicide rates for youths (15-24), as reported by the WHO, are Finland, New Zealand and Estonia.

          • TAAN 3:08 am on March 15, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Don’t worry about it, it’s just an old myth that stemmed from the enormous pressure Japanese students have on them as compared to places like the US.
